About Vambo AI

Vambo AI builds language technology for African and other underserved languages. Its products include Vambo Translate, a consumer and enterprise translation app on web, iOS and Android; Vambo Studio, a developer platform with APIs for translation, speech-to-text and text-to-speech; and Vambo for Schools, classroom tools for multilingual teaching. The company reports coverage of more than 60 African and global languages and has clients in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria and Senegal.

Vambo Technologies (Pty) Ltd was founded in 2023 by Chido Dzinotyiwei (CEO), a Zimbabwean Mandela Rhodes Scholar and University of Cape Town alumna, and Isheanesu Misi (CTO). The company has been supported by Mastercard Foundation, ALX Ventures, Injini, Grindstone and Datamellon, and has raised roughly $300,000 in grant funding including a $20,000 Meta Llama Impact Grant.

Vambo won the 2024 Äänit Prize from the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and has been featured by Forbes Africa, BBC News Africa and a Stanford GSB case study. In 2026 it was the South African representative in Class 10 of the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, which ran from March to June 2026 and ended with a Demo Day in Nairobi.
