About Thuto

Thuto is a South African edtech platform that makes students' academic effort, engagement and progress visible and rewards it. Learners earn points, badges and leaderboard positions for progress rather than only for grades; parents and schools fund and select reward programmes; and points can be spent on educational items, digital products and investment products, which doubles as a financial-literacy lesson. Teachers and schools get analytics and AI-generated insights on learner performance, and the app includes a mood tracker and access to counselling.

The company sells to schools and parents with students as end users. It claims a 14.5% average mark improvement among participating learners. Pilot testing began in July 2023 at a township school in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria.

Thuto was co-founded by Nkosinathi Temba (CEO), named one of News24's 100 Young Mandelas of the Future in 2023, and Nicholas Wentworth (COO), with Lebogang Moswaane as Head of Education. It is based in Roodepoort, Gauteng. In October 2026 Thuto was selected for the Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa 2026 cohort, a three-month programme of 15 startups ending in a December Demo Day.
