What each figure counts

Startup
A technology company with a profile approved by the StartupList Africa team. Only approved profiles count towards startup totals, sector counts and country counts.
Headquarters (HQ)
The city and country recorded on the startup's profile. Country pages, country filters and funding by country all use this field.
Sector
The industry marked as primary on the startup's profile. A startup can carry several industries; sector totals count each startup once, under its primary industry.
Funding round
One disclosed capital raise by a startup, with a round type (for example Seed, Series A, Debt Financing), an announcement date and, where published, an amount and investors.
Amount raised
The disclosed amount in US dollars. Rounds announced in another currency are converted at the exchange rate on the announcement date.
Undisclosed round
A round whose amount was not published. It counts towards the number of rounds and adds nothing to capital totals.
Lead investor
An investor recorded as leading the round. Other investors in the same round are listed as participants.
Year
The calendar year of the round's announcement date (January to December).

Where the data comes from

Startup profiles are reviewed before they are published. Records come from:

  • Press releases and announcements from startups and investors
  • Regulatory and company filings where public
  • News coverage of African technology companies
  • Verified submissions from founders through the submission and claim flows
  • Public company signals used to keep profiles current, such as websites and social profiles

Pages show the date they were last updated. Funding round pages list the publication behind each round. Founders can submit or claim a startup.

Questions about the data

How often is StartupList Africa data updated?
Every day. New funding rounds, profile changes and approved submissions are published as they are reviewed, and directory totals are recalculated at least every five minutes.
Why do totals on different pages sometimes differ?
Each page states what it counts. Startup totals count approved profiles; sector and country counts use each startup's primary industry and recorded headquarters; funding totals count disclosed rounds. A startup without a primary industry appears in the startup total but not in a sector.
How do I report an error or add missing data?
Founders can submit or claim a startup through the submission flow. For corrections to rounds or profiles, email team@startuplist.africa with the page link and the source.
How should I cite StartupList Africa?
Cite the page title, the date it was updated and the canonical URL, for example: StartupList Africa, "Startup funding in Africa", updated 3 Oct 2026, startuplist.africa/fundings. Every directory and record page shows this citation in its Cite this page card.
