About Aflabox

Aflabox builds a portable grain-screening device that photographs a sample under white and ultraviolet light and uses AI to grade each kernel as normal, mouldy, broken or pest-damaged, flagging likely mycotoxin contamination in under 90 seconds. Results appear on the device and in a cloud dashboard with geolocated records. The unit sells for about $5,000 with a $100 annual data subscription, and is positioned as a triage tool that sends suspect lots to a laboratory.

Customers are cooperatives and aggregators, millers and food processors, traders, exporters and regulators. The company has a commercial presence in Kenya, Nigeria and Italy; it introduced the product to Kenyan millers at the Cereal Millers Association conference in 2026 and expects to supply 200 to 300 units to Kenya's private sector this year.

Aflabox was founded in 2024 and is registered in Sassuolo, Italy. The team is led by CEO Luca Alinovi, a former FAO official based in Kenya, with co-founders Alessio Colussi (CTO), Fabrizio Cardillo (CMO) and Elijah Mwangi (CIO). Its prototype won Best Agro-tech Idea at Maker Faire Rome in 2023. In August 2026 it closed a EUR 1.35 million seed round from FoodSeed (CDP Venture Capital and Eatable Adventures) and Farming Future.
