About Steps Initiative

Steps Initiative is a Rwandan youth-led organisation that raises awareness of drug addiction and mental health. Led by director Alain Nshimiyimana, a former patient of the Huye Isange Rehabilitation Centre, it has since 2021 run about 100 outreach activities, reached roughly 35 schools and partnered with four rehabilitation centres in Huye and Nyarugenge districts. It is building a mobile app that lets users assess alcohol addiction or mental-health problems, find nearby hospitals and consult a doctor remotely. In September 2026 it was one of six winners of Imbuto Foundation's iAccelerator Phase 7, receiving Rwf 10 million in seed funding and six months of mentorship.
