Gjenge Makers
OperatingTurns non-recyclable plastic waste into durable paving bricks for construction and landscaping in Kenya
About Gjenge Makers
Gjenge Makers manufactures paving bricks from plastic waste that would otherwise go to landfill. The company collects plastics that conventional recyclers cannot use, mixes them with sand and compresses the blend into pavers in grey, blue and red, which are sold for driveways, walkways and other construction projects. Its Nairobi plant has produced between 1,000 and 1,500 bricks a day.
Founded by Nzambi Matee, Gjenge Makers sits at the intersection of waste management and building materials, selling its pavers to construction buyers while diverting tonnes of plastic away from dumpsites. The company won the Best Climate Tech Startup award at the 2024 AfricArena Grand Summit in Cape Town.
