About AskMandla

AskMandla is a South African WhatsApp-first platform that formalises domestic employment. Through a chat agent called Mandla, employers of nannies, gardeners, cooks and drivers generate compliant employment contracts, run monthly payroll, issue payslips, track leave and register and contribute to UIF and COIDA. Workers receive payslips and a verifiable work record, and can draw up to 25 percent of earned wages mid-month through an earned-wage-access feature.

Pricing is R49 per worker per month plus a once-off R450 onboarding fee, with standalone UIF registration also available; workers pay nothing. Free tools include a wage calculator, a household compliance check and a worker directory, and a small-business tier covers staff outside the home. The company says it serves a market of more than a million domestic workers in South Africa.

AskMandla launched on Workers' Day, 1 May 2025, and was founded by Peter Adolphs (CEO) and Janine Kane-Berman (Chief Legal Officer), who built the first version for her own household. By July 2026 it reported about 10,000 users, over R5 million in net salaries processed and more than 1,000 payslips issued. In June 2026 it was one of three startups selected for the Ninety One Accelerator, run with Endeavor South Africa in support of the Earthshot Prize.
