BioMec builds comfortable, high-performance mechanical prostheses using recycled plastics collected from the sea. By turning ocean plastic into affordable limbs, the Mozambican startup aims to improve mobility and quality of life for amputees while reducing plastic waste. The approach gives a second life to plastic collected from the sea and makes prosthetic limbs more accessible to people who cannot afford conventional devices.

BioMec was founded by Marta Uetela, who reached the final stage of the PET Heroes 2024 innovation award. The company advanced to the regional stage of the Seedstars World Competition 2020 as Mozambique's local winner.
