About Ampersand

Ampersand builds electric motorcycles and a battery-swapping network for commercial motorcycle-taxi riders. Its e-motos run on AI-optimised swappable batteries that cost less to operate than petrol bikes, which the company says raises driver income by about 45% a day while cutting air pollution and carbon emissions. It reports more than 10,000 e-motos powered, 20,000 battery swaps and 950,000 kilometres a day, and 14,000 tonnes of CO2e avoided, with operations in Rwanda and Kenya. The company is based in Kigali.

Ampersand was founded in 2016. It is a MEST Africa portfolio company and is backed by Beyond Capital Ventures.
