Leon Renaud was an Advocate (lawyer) of the Supreme Court in Natal, South Africa, and a pioneering entrepreneur in the maritime shipping industry. Originally from Mauritius, he worked as a supervisor at Reynolds Bros mill from 1886 to 1894 before entering the legal profession. In 1922, he co-founded the SS Frontier Company with Captain John Edward Grindrod, purchasing a 150-tonne steamship. In 1933, he established African Coasters, which later became Unicorn Shipping. His business partnership with the Grindrod family laid the foundation for what is now Grindrod Limited, a major logistics and shipping company listed on the JSE Securities Exchange. Renaud died in 1934, and his son Dr. Cecil Renaud continued the family's business legacy.
