Hugh Whalan is a serial entrepreneur focused on eliminating energy poverty in Africa. He founded Energy In Common in 2009, the first crowdfunding site for energy lending in Africa. In 2011, he founded Impact Energies Ghana, a solar asset financing business that was acquired by Persistent Energy Partners in 2014 in the first off-grid solar exit in Africa. In 2013, he co-founded PEG Africa with Nate Heller, growing it into a 1000+ person social enterprise operating across West Africa, providing PAYG solar financing to households and SMEs. PEG Africa was acquired by Bboxx in 2022. He has been recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2015), named one of Australia's top 30 entrepreneurs under 30, and is an Aspen Institute Global Leadership Fellow. Currently founder at Water Bear Capital.
