Herman Engelbrecht

Herman Engelbrecht is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering (2007) and MSc.Eng (2004) from Stellenbosch University. He served as Head of Department from 2019-2024 and previously held positions as Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer. He co-founded Custos Media Technologies in 2014, serving as Chairman of the Board until 2020. Custos developed imperceptible watermarking technology using blockchain to protect digital media from piracy. His research focuses on multi-agent reinforcement learning, autonomous racing, speech and language processing, distributed systems, and wireless networks. He previously directed the MIH Media Lab from 2008-2019.
