Biography
Dr Ronnie van der Merwe is a South African specialist anaesthetist who transitioned from clinical practice to healthcare leadership. He worked in the medical insurance industry at Sanlam Health before joining Mediclinic in 1999 as Clinical Manager. He established the Clinical Services, Clinical Information, Advanced Analytics, Health Information Management, and central Procurement functions at Mediclinic. He served as Group Chief Clinical Officer before his appointment as Group Chief Executive Officer in June 2018. He has extensive knowledge of Mediclinic's operations across Switzerland, South Africa, Namibia, and the Middle East. Under his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mediclinic treated 78,000 hospitalized patients and administered 1.2 million vaccines. He is also a non-executive director at Spire Healthcare since May 2018.
